The Secondary School currently has over 600 students in Years 7-11, and over 200 students in our Sixth Form. Our reputation is to provide academic excellence via a balanced international curriculum, while enabling our students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.
Our curriculum in the lower years (Years 7, 8 and 9) is the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), after which students then study their choice of subjects at (I)GCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) or International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP) in our Sixth Form. Our students annually achieve results well above UK and global averages, and are highly successful in their applications to leading universities in the UK, USA, Canada and Asia.
Students at BSJ are exceptionally active in exploring and developing their individual passions and talents. We have an expansive programme of opportunities that encompass: sports, drama, music, art, technology, leadership, charity and community service.
The British School Jakarta is seeking highly-qualified, innovative, inspiring, and a forward thinking leader whom will make positive contributions to the strategic direction of the subject within the framework of the school Strategic Plan.
The Science faculty comprises of fourteen full-time teachers, four technicians and one support member of staff. The faculty is well-resourced with a wide range of software/hardware and textbooks, and based in its own block of nine multi-functional labs. Academic results throughout the school in all Science subjects are excellent. After following the IB MYP for three years, at the start of Year 10, students opt to either study three separate Sciences (Edexcel, 9-1), or the Double Award (Edexcel, 9-1) course. Within the IB curriculum, the Science faculty offer: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies, and Sports Science.
 
Curriculum Leadership and Management:
  • To embed the school Mission and Guiding Principles into daily practice, providing strong leadership and inspiring a shared vision for the faculty.
  • To ensure that curriculum provision follows the agreed Curriculum Model at each stage in the Secondary school and articulate the curriculum offered and skills included at each level to all stakeholders.
  • To ensure that all members of the faculty are effectively inducted into the school, clear about their role and responsibilities within the faculty and of the professional expectations of the school.
  • To build and sustain a cohesive and collaborative faculty team, providing both support and challenge to enable best practice in teaching and learning and support staff well-being.
  • To ensure that line management processes and procedures are followed as per school policy within the faculty and that cause for concern is raised, discussed and acted upon with the agreement of the line manager.
  • To ensure that effective curriculum planning is in place and is regularly evaluated and reviewed by members of the faculty adhering to school policy.
  • To conduct an annual Examinations Review of IGCSE and IB results under the guidance of the Deputy Head of Secondary, analysing data to identify, strengths, trends and areas for targeted improvement.
  • To contribute to school evaluation processes as appropriate, e.g. IB Review, CIS Accreditation processes.
  • To work collaboratively with Middle Leaders and the wider community to create and plan opportunities for contextualising learning and developing inter-disciplinary learning experiences for students.
  Teaching and Learning
  • To promote the use of evidence based research in teaching and learning within the faculty.
  • To monitor the quality of teaching and learning in the faculty and carry out two formal lesson observations in the first two terms of the academic year as per the lesson observation procedure.
  • To ensure that the needs of all learners (IN, EAL and G and T) are catered for within the faculty through on-going collaboration with Student Services and that effective differentiation is embedded into learning.
  • To ensure that staff are integrating technology into learning as appropriate.
  • To monitor the consistency and quality of homework across the faculty on a regular basis.
  • To ensure that staff development needs are identified, supported (reasonably) and evaluated for impact on student learning and the faculty.
  Administration and Communication:
  • To liaise with the Deputy Head of Secondary in the creation of the school timetable.
  • To ensure that all external examination entry documentation is completed as directed by the Examinations Officer, including recommendations for Examination re-sits and that deadlines are met for submitting examination papers for all internal examinations.
  • To create effective channels of communication within the faculty.
  • To ensure that curriculum guides present accurate information on all programmes of study and that information on the school website is accurate and updated as required.
  Person Specification
  • Fully qualified Science teacher in Biology, Chemistry or Physics with minimum 5 years teaching experience and leadership role in an international school setting.
  • Teaching experience in IB DP is desirable.
  • A leader with high commitment to the success of teaching and learning in the science faculty.
  • Able to motivate and drive highly professional team member to assist students in achieving their best potential in the subject.
